The inspiration starts with questions intended to bring hope to an ordinary Filipino teacher in Thailand who is regarded as a very important force yet treated as a second-rate surrogate educator... an eye-opener to those who doubt the sincerity and dedication of a Filipino teacher.

How does a Filipino view the English language education in Thailand? How does a Filipino truly feel towards language teaching in a neighboring country whose culture is closely similar to his amidst the threat of stereotyping in the field of English language education?

There are certain adjustments needed to be made which require flexibility and open-mindedness like polishing up your social, physical and cultural state in congruence to what is acceptable in a foreign country. Among these changes, working in another country is the most intriguing.

A language teacher, no matter how experienced and brilliant he is, goes back to the state of being a neophyte when confronted with a new teaching environment and a different culture. However, an experienced language teacher may easily make the necessary pedagogical adjustments. It took me at least a year to truly understand how Thai people regard the English language and education as a whole. And it took me two years to gradually change my teaching and working style. I believe I am still in the process of mastering the art and craft of teaching Thai students without compromising what I think is relatively standard. I view the English language education in Thailand as fast-growing but lacks coherence and independence. There are more than 3,000 Filipino teachers added to the rest of thousands of other nationalities who take advantage of the boom in the English language teaching industry. Almost every school in big cities and provinces has foreign teachers helping their Thai counterparts in teaching English and other content subjects. The sudden increase of private language institutes all over the country signifies the eagerness of Thai societies to make their workforce and businesses globally competitive. Instead, a more positive view should be generalized that Thai students are being prepared in dealing with language barriers as they are exposed with different varieties of English, native English included. The Filipinos complement the strengths and weaknesses of other foreign and Thai teachers by effectively integrating music, arts and literary appreciation techniques in language instruction. Indeed, English language teaching in Thailand has a lot to offer not only to its students but to the language teacher s as well. With the different "nationalities" of foreign teachers, they bring a piece of globalization realities in the school.

Unfortunately, the English language instruction needed more special attention. In comparison, the Philippines is faced with the issues on maintaining its English literacy among the youths. Unless the "commercial" attitude of many schools is brought to an end, English language education will remain a business hub and an illusion especially in small provinces. Unless school administrators and even the Ministry of Education take all confidence in making decisions without the fear of disapproval from the parents and students, English language teaching will remain a form of discrimination in the employment arena. Qualifications based on academic achievement, trainings and experiences, skill and most importantly a genuine heart of intention in truly educating should be highlighted in hiring teachers rather than be fascinated with the color of their skin or their amusing accents.

As a result, the quality of English language education is compromised because of the parents' misconception towards language education, the schools' love of money, the heartless, unskilled and uneducated foreign individuals who enjoy being the schools' faade and bait, the inconsistency of school's language education framework and policies to actual classroom instruction and evaluation, and those Thai teachers who allow themselves in becoming more inferior to their foreign counterparts and those who stubbornly stay stagnant with what is traditional in English language teaching.

To a Filipino, teaching English as a second language is not all about accent or mastery of pronunciation, idiom and colloquial...it is all about the ability of a student to express what he feels and use his knowledge to appreciate the humanities and most importantly to use the language to further educate himself. To a Filipino, there is something happening more than teaching English to students, it is the desire to give them encouragement no matter how difficult it may be. Although some are not well compensated; overloaded with many teaching hours; discriminated in getting employed; and ridiculed as inferiors in using the English language non-native, they will remain to be trusted of having the best intention of developing not only the language skills of their students but inspiring them to be productive and creative citizens in the future.

For those who dont handle culture shock well, living outside a major city in a third world country like The Philippines can be too difficult to handle.Where I am there are no movie houses. Theres one television and one radio station in my small city of around 100,000. Both are broadcast in the Filipino language. If you have enough money, depending upon your location, you might be able to get cable television which offers numerous English language stations.

Think about health care.Realize that you might not be covered by your American Health Insurance if you visit The Philippins. Why? Because most insurers consider most if not all the medical facilities outside Manila to be less than adequate. Many medications are simply not available.

Introduction

Learning of any new language is different from learning a new subject. To achieve success in the process of learning a language, one must follow certain steps. Those steps aren't filled with difficult procedures rather they're of simple techniques. To be more specific about those techniques, they're the steps which even we have followed (unknowingly), when we were kids at the time of learning our Mother tongue.

Most of the people, even though they've studied English, right from their school days, might be even in the English medium of instruction, still many of them are facing the problem of communicating in English. The problem is because they've been thought or learnt/studied English like a subject.

Many students/people if they've been asked about their English communication, they'll tell a common answer i.e. " I'm doing many grammatical errors; frequently I'm doing grammar mistakes etc." Here the reality is, they're not doing many mistakes but they're doing only some/same mistakes many times! The main reason for the mistake is worrying too much about usage of the grammar and also trying to make more perfect or standard answer/sentence. So in the beginning stage one should stop giving over importance to the grammar.

In this chapter, simple and effective attempts are made to develop the English communication. In fact these techniques are also tested on more than 40 students from different age group and academic background.

Language learning methods

There is no short cut method to learn a language. The method of learning a language requires certain steps. Practicing those steps with interest, will definitely results in effective learning of the language.

The language learning methods are as follows.

Those methods can also be abbreviated as L T S R W. They're

L: Listening T: Thinking S: Speaking R: Reading W: Writing

1. Listening: Listening is nothing but a process of hearing with concentration' for better understanding. But in the instant context, listening means observation of verbal communication like speaking (mainly for the formation of sentences), pronunciation, intonation while speaking etc.

As kids, at the time of speaking, even we were listening to our parents rather the speakers, that too with eye to eye contact. Now as a beginners or layman it'd be better if we start listening the language part, preferably The News! Here along with listening of the news it's equally important to observe the lip movement of the reader because it's also an important thing that is going to help us for the better pronunciation.

As we're more focusing on the development of English communication, listening of English news, is very much needed because it really guides a person in the areas like usage of words, pronunciation etc. So, as the 1st step one should start to watch the English news in TV channels and also listening news in Radio is a right method.

In initial stage it may happen to some layman that they're unable to understand the matter in the news. Fine it's not an issue! Still they must go ahead with the process of observing the lip movements. After some days even those people can able to understand without much difficulty. But listening is very important because it is the primary process which provides materials/ideas for the remaining 4 steps.

2. Thinking:This is another important process. Remember "if you want to speak fluently in English, you have to think rapidly in English". Yes! Thinking in any language will not only give good command over the language but also improves one's recollecting ability. For example, at the time of thinking any individual will think normally in his/her mother tongue. In case of solving problems, happy or sad movements he/she will do it in their mother tongue. This is because we're very much familiar to the language. To get the same degree of familiarity in English, one should start to think in English consequently he/she can speak in English fluently.

Once again if we go back to the example of a kid, after listening and before speaking, it'll think in its mind what to speak Without attending any classes when a child has learnt a language means why not you and me! The same thing even we need to follow i.e. thinking in English' but it doesn't mean one has to keep on thinking for the whole day. Just for 15 to 20 minutes (not more than half an hour) per day is sufficient. One common problem at the time of thinking in English is, thinking what to think? Most of the candidates are ready to think in English, but they may not able to decide what to think. In such case just start to recollect mentally, what're the things you did yesterday since morning 6:00 am to night 10:00 pm. Next prepare an action plan in English (Psychologically) for tomorrow/next day. Further think (in English) what you'll do if you become Prime minister of India, CEO of a leading company etc These kinds of scenario based questions, recollecting past event s etc, will certainly makes a person to think rapidly, consequently one can improve not only the thinking ability but also the communication skill. Moreover at the time of remembering the past events the additional advantage is one can also improve his recollecting ability.

3. Speaking: The purpose of any language is for communication. In other words speaking is the most common mode of communication. For the effective speaking, one has to practice the art of speaking. The previous steps listening and thinking prepares a person to speak and speaking alone gives fluency in the language. So speaking is also equally important. Speaking to customer care executives (toll free numbers) is also a good exercise where we can improve the speaking skill.

One should speak without worrying about the mistakes. It'd be better if one starts to speak with a person who knows the language. Here are some more Do's & Don'ts which one should follow to get fluency.

What you think that you become. So don't think that you can't speak. Think you can speak & you'll speak well.

Select any simple materials to read. Read it loudly. Confirm the pronunciation if needed.

While reading give adequate time gaps like full stops comas etc.

Try to speak with yourself. At the time of doing so, record what you've read or spoken. After, you must listen what you have recorded so that, you can easily judge your own conversation and can make necessary modifications in your communication.

Practice tongue twisters. Because it'll enhance your pronunciation and fluency.

4. Reading: This is another step to strengthen our communication skill. The significance of reading is to promote learning of a language. In fact there's no easy way to learn a language. The more you read, the more you understand. Reading of standard news papers, magazines etc will just provide bookish language of course it also helps to improve vocabulary but it'll not help in strengthening the communicative English. What to do then? In order to improve communicative English rather conversation skills one should read local newspapers with interest, preferably the columns like reader's forum, voice of reader etc. Further reading is an exercise to speak. So reading loudly with proper pronunciation and intonation, will surely results in speaking fluently.

At the time of reading have a dictionary with you to clear the doubts. It's always good to keep a dictionary, however knowledgeable you are! If possible try to have an audio dictionary or computer based dictionary (like CD's/DVD's or Chip) because, apart from knowing the meaning one can also learn the pronunciation. Moreover it's very much user friendly.

One more thing, one should do at the time of reading. That is transforming and substituting the sentences. Transforming in the sense, you have read something in the present tense. Try to put the same in any other tense like past or future (past participle). E.g. " He has a nice handset" you can put this as he had a nice handset; he'll have a nice handset etc Next substituting in the sense you read like Vivek selected a book; substitute it like this. Vivek selected a dress in ABC garments, Vivek purchased a book, Vivek bought a new car from UK etc. These steps will show a way to improve and strengthen the communication.

5. Writing: Another important method to improve communication skill is writing. Writing helps us to express ourselves. Writing can be a great tool to help us to understand more about the way we think. Writing can strengthen ideas and thoughts and allow us to reflect on them better.

Writing is one of the ways that we translate our thoughts for others. Some people are better in expressing themselves in writing than any other way. Writing assists us with other language tasks like formation of sentence, knowing the correct spelling etc. We can also learn to make a logical argument, and also to convince others mainly through writing. Further writing (either writing of ideas or copy writing) makes to understand and remember better especially the grammar areas in the process of communication. Copy writing in English, makes us to understand the complex grammatical aspects and also the correct spellings consequently we can improve our word power.

Conclusion:Language learning is an art. In this corporate era, English learning is very much significant. However, there's no easy way to learn any new language. It requires hard work, interest and sincere attempts. Moreover learning English or any other language, cannot be possible overnight so instead of expecting instant results, it'd be better to put honest efforts in learning. Evidently the more time you study the faster you will learn. It is also important to speak the language as much as possible even if you make mistakes. The more you try, the faster you will start speaking.

Here are some English language learning tips that will help you to learn English:

English Language Learning Tip 1 Pronunciation!

The FIRST thing you should do is to listen to and learn the PRONUNCIATION of the language. My advice to you is to get this right from day one! Spend time on this now and the rest of your study for the rest of your learning period will benefit enormously !

Some languages are phonetic, some are not. Phonetic means the sounds and the letters of the words always match. There are international phonetic symbols that show how to pronounce all the sounds in all of the world world languages.

The English language is not a phonetic language. It is IMPERATIVE to first learn the phonetic symbols that relate to the sounds of English words. It is certainly possible to learn English without any knowledge of these phonetic symbols but your learning time will be much longer and most times your pronunciation will be inaccurate as you are relying on memorising the sounds of the words for the most part of your learning, just as you had to do as a baby.

I strongly recommend the learning of the phonetic symbols for learners of English before you start your first grammar or reading book! If you can learn the CORRECT pronunciation at the beginning, it will save you a lot of precious learning time later. It is much harder to harder to undo incorrect learning and have to relearn the word correctly.

Every time you look for a word in the dictionary you should write this word in a small pocket pocket notebook, small enough to keep in your pocket or handbag along with your pocket dictionary, so that you can use it at all times and all places (eg standing waiting for the bus!)

Speaking:

Now you are ready to put it all together and SPEAK! Try to do this as soon as you can and dont be afraid to make a mistake. If it is a bad noticeable mistake a native speaker will soon tell you. However a native speaker will not always tell you your mistakes! A native speaker will not always know the grammar of their own language. (Do you?). So may not be able to explain your mistakes but just give you the right answer.

It is best to do some study with a recognised language college. If you are studying with a private teacher, ask to see his/her qualifications. Just because someone is a native speaker of his or her language does not make him. Her a qualified teacher! He/she must have some kind of teaching qualification AND an EFL (English as a foreign language) teaching qualification.

Ways you can practise speaking:

Speak with a professionally qualified native teacher as much as possible. This is the first best source you have as you will learn the right way from the beginning.

Other students in your class (do NOT be tempted to speak your own native language during class time!)

With native speakers that you might know, or advertise for exchange lessons!

Visit the native language country so that you can practise speaking with native speakers.

If possible, go and study and or work in the native language country. Definitely the longer you can stay, the better. In six months you should be at least intermediate level and in one year you should aim for fluency, that is, if you stay and mix with native speakers for the entire duration of your stay. DO NOT be tempted to live with people of your own nationality. You may as well be learning at home and your progress will be much slower!

The current rise of English to a world language is becoming a matter of concern for some people while others perceive it as a chance for the world to overcome language barriers. Over the years, English language has presumed a great importance as a means of communication in the global world but across the globe, media and academicians have raised their concerns that depict English language as imperialist, predatory and killer to other languages and in a way it is undermining the linguistic diversity in the world. For some people, English language has the potential of forming a true cosmopolitanism that eradicate language barriers and consequently curse of Babel. For others, English language is nothing but coming monoculture language domination. Statistics reveal that more people are learning English language as the second language and it is estimated that between 2010 and 2015, more than two billion people, which is a third of the world population will be learning English a s their second language. Adding to the current number of people who are fluent in English, it is estimated that half o the world population will be proficient in English language compared ton only 250 million people in early 1952. During the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, English language was spread through expansion of British Empire (Baugh and Cable, 2002). Since the mid 20th century, English language has also been extensively used in the United States and it has emerged as lingua franca not only in the original British Empire but also to other countries as well. English is extensively used as the second language in many countries and also as official language in Commonwealth countries and in other international organizations.

Due to increased use in different languages, English has undergone change in dialects and now there seems to be the Old English which is still used in Queen Territory, American English used in United States and many other dialects which are influenced by the local languages (Bishop and Philips, 2006). Today it is estimated that about 375 million people speaks English as their first language and English has become the third larges native speakers language coming after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish (Baugh and Cable, 2002). However native speakers and non-native speakers are combined, English become the most commonly spoken language in the world. According to David Crystal who has done extensive work on English language shows that non native speakers outnumber native speakers by a ratio of 3 is to 1 (Crystal, 2003).

According to country rank, United States has the highest number of English speakers adding up to 215 million, United Kingdom comes second with 61 million, Canada third with 18.2 million, Australia fourth with 15.5 million, Ireland fifth with 3.8 million, and South Africa comes at distant fifth with 3.7 million speakers (Boran, 2003). However, it is important to understand that former British colonies also have a high number of English speakers. Countries like Jamaica, Niger, India, and others have a high number of English speaking individuals (Crystal, 1997). It is estimated that currently India has the highest number of people who speak or understand English although the number who speak good English are very few. Most of them speak English based Creole. It is also important to note that three countries including United States, United Kingdom, and Australia have the highest percentage of their population speaking English. United States has 96%, United Kingdom with 98%, an d Australia with 92% (Crystal, 1997).

(ii) How important is English language in the world?

English has grown to become a dominant global lingua franca (Boran, 2003). It is used as international language in communication, science, business, aviation, entertainment, diplomacy and in different other ways (Boran, 2003). English has spread beyond the original English isles starting with the growth of British Empire. The language however gained a boost after the colonization of North American and the consequent rise of United States to the most influential nation in the world. Since the end of the World War II, the use of English in the world has been catapulted by the increased dominance of United States and Britain in world affairs especially in the International organizations like United Nations (Boran, 2003).

Knowledge of English has become a basic requirement in different fields, occupation and professions like Medicine, computing and many others (Bishop and Philips, 2006). This use of English in education and economic areas can be traced to the era of industrial revolution in Britain and the consequent industrial revolution that led to a number of inventions. As a way of spreading the technological invention to the rest of the world, English was adopted as a means of communication and henceforth it has become an important part communication in the world. Today, more than one billion people can speak English at a basic level and the language has also become one of the six official languages in the United Nations (Crystal, 1997).

The rise of English has had positive impacts to the world. Most Linguisticians have advocated that multilingualism is a barrier to effective communication and hence undermine cultural integration. According to Archibugi (2005) multilingualism is an obstacle and barrier to democracy and hence it must be overcome to ensure advancement of the societies. This is encapsulated in the notion that development comes only when there is exchange of views, developments, and technology and this cannot be achieved when there is a language barrier. Archibugi (2005) shows that cosmopolitans mostly prefer to have a directly understandable language rather than having a myriad of colorful non accessible languages that benefits only those who understands them. In his line of argument, he posits that development in the world would not have reached its current height if there was no one language that could be used as a means of communication.

R. K. Narayans attitude towards the English language:
a postcolonial posture, a utilitarian gesture

Abstract
This paper is intended to examine R. K. Narayans attitude towards the English language as reflected in his essays. Narayan (1906-2001) was born and grown up in a period when English education was already institutionalised in the Indian Sub-continent. Like other Indian writers in English, such as Raja Rao and Mulk Raj Anand, he received English education and used to write in English from the beginning of his literary career up to the end. However, he is seen to have used the English language and literary form to scrutinise colonialism and depict the Indian society continually under change due to the colonial rule. A part of this endeavour seems to be evident in Narayans attitude towards the English language. Narayans position in this regard is deemed quite ambivalent and complex he is aware that English is the language of the colonist, yet he is found to have accepted it for practical reasons. That is, his attitude towards the English language appears to have resulted from and shaped by the reality prevailing in the postcolonial setting.

The study of the English language and literature in the postcolonial context seems to be a densely political and cultural phenomenon (Ashcroft, Griffiths and Tiffins 1989: 2-3) and consequently comes under the purview of the postcolonial writers. One of the fundamental assertions of postcolonialism is that the English language and literature have played a very significant role in propounding colonial ideology aimed at the survival and consolidation of the colonial rule (Walder 1998). In other words, the construction of English literary education is part of the colonial cultural design (Viswanathan 1995). Many postcolonial writers have attempted to address the issue of cultural domination through the English language and literature. For instance, Thiongo (1995) opines that the central position given to the study of the English language and literature in Africa emanates from the assumption of the cultural superiority of the West. This is why, he prescribes that the English depa rtments should be abolished from the universities in Africa. Indian novelist Raja Rao (2000: v) states that English is the language of the intellect, not of emotion; and in India English should therefore be appropriated to the level of a dialect which will some day prove to be as distinctive and colourful as the Irish or the American. Hence, postcolonial writing uses the language of the colonists but adapts it to the discourse of the colonised. It is performed by two processes: abrogation and appropriation (Ashcroft, Griffiths and Tiffins 1989). Abrogation stands for challenging the notion of universality as claimed by the colonists with regard to the language. Appropriation, on the other hand, is the use of the imperial language to express the cultural experience of the colonised. This is a process by which imperial English is made to encounter vernacular languages. Standard English words are used in many new meanings, and, in turn, the English language receives many new wo rds from indigenous languages. Besides, postcolonial literature emerges out of the tension between these two pulls. Ashcroft, Griffiths and Tiffin (1989: 39) rightly maintain-

in one sense all post-colonial literatures are cross-cultural because they negotiate a gap between worlds, a gap in which the simultaneous processes of abrogation and appropriation continually strive to define and determine their practice.

Thus, challenging and overhauling the Eurocentric notion of language become an essential part of literary decolonisation (Loomba 2001).
As Boehmer (1995) illustrates, almost all the aspects of the world of the colonised including the language of instruction and commerce were dominated by the empire. The colonial education of the middle class people then tended to create mental colonization among them: English-language and -literature instruction played a key role in naturalizing British values (Boehmer 1995:169). By the early 20th century, students from the colonies were heavily influenced by the excellence of the English language and literature. This factor seems to account for the syncretic nature of the postcolonial society, which cannot be compartmentalised into either a purely traditional or a purely alien. Ashcroft, Griffiths and Tiffin (1989: 110) contend, The construction of pure cultural value is always conducted within a radically altered dynamic of power relations. Therefore, a postcolonial reading of R. K. Narayans works, especially essays with regard to his attitude to the English language would likely to reveal that he endeavours to formulate a synthesis between the Indian element and the colonial one.

II
The colonial education that Narayan received might have influenced his views on the English language since in the classroom Narayan had to see English as the first language, his native language being a second language (Walsh 1982). English was the most prestigious subject due to political, administrative, social, economic and scientific reasons. Although Tamil, the language of Narayans province, and Sanskrit, the classical language of India, were taught in the school, they were considered inferior in status and provided occasions for jokes. Narayan (2001b: 464) admits this in his essay English in India-

But in the classroom neither of these two languages was given any importance; they were assigned to the most helpless among the teachers, the pundits who were treated as a joke by the boys, since they taught only the second language, the first being English as ordained by Lord Macaulay when he introduced English education in India.

Besides encountering textbooks in English in his school and college, Narayan extensively read English literature outside his syllabus. His fathers library at home and his school library were crammed with books on English literature (Narayan 2001b). Narayan took the full opportunity of the libraries and enthusiastically read Scott, Dickens, Rider Haggard, Marie Corelli, Moliere, Pope, Marlowe, Tolstoy, Thomas Hardy and others (Narayan 1995). He was also in touch with the current literary scene through various magazines such as Little Folks, Nineteenth Century and After, Cornhill, Strand Magazine, Mercury, The Spectator, The Times Literary Supplement and The Manchester Guardian. The cumulative impact of this massive reading of the English literature was that he became very well versed in the English language. As a writer, Narayan opted for the English language simply because it suited him better than his mother tongue. In an interview, he says-

I never had any idea that I was writing in another tongue. My whole education has been in English from the primary school, and most of my reading has been in the English language . . . I wrote in English because it came to me very easily. (qtd. by Sundaram 1988)

It was then very unlikely that a writer like Narayan who learned the English language to such an extent as to produce his works in it, would reject or censure it easily on nationalistic grounds.

India became free from the colonial rule in 1947, but the linguistic and cultural implication of colonialism still remained operative, serving two conspicuously unavoidable purposes: a unifying linguistic agency for administration and a means of wider international communication (Kachru: 1995). In the mean time, the issue of either the acceptance or the rejection of the English language became one of the hot debates since the beginning of Indian nationalist movement in the 1920s. Gandhis Swadeshi Movement was aimed at embracing all that was swadeshi (indigenous), and hence English being a foreign language came under the scrutiny of this movement. The use of the English language by the Indians was often denounced, and Hindi was seen as a possible substitute. In his novel Waiting for the Mahatma, Narayan (2001a: 27) has made Gandhi declare that he will not deliver his lecture in English because Its the language of our rulers. It has enslaved us. As Leela Gandhi (1998: 147) poin ts out, Gandhis rejection of the English language stems from his belief in the legitimate cultural primacy of the Indian languages. Nevertheless, the attempted ban on the English language created two contradictory positions among the Indian writers. The first group consisting of the writers using the indigenous languages protested against writing in English on nationalistic grounds. The second group constituted of the Indian writers in English continued writing in the English language to express their Indian experience. These polarities existing at the end of the colonial period surfaced with renewed vigour and extended dimensions after the independence of India (Dharwadker and Dharwadker 1996). Indian lawmakers framed a fifteen- year time limit to upgrade Hindi to the position of the official language of India. However, this project of expelling English within a fixed period yielded almost no result. Iyengar (2000) presents sufficient statistics of 1957 to show that there was no spectacular advance of Hindi, and the position of English as an Indian official language remained the same English was still t he language of inter-state communication or the sole lingua franca, the language of higher administration, law courts, education and examinations. Resultantly, parliamentary enactment gave English the status of an associate language with Hindi.
That Narayan (1988a: 14) was aware of the debate on the position of the English language in his country is evident in his essay Fifteen Years-

. . . various causes, practical, political, etc. have demanded the abolition of English from our midst. It is almost a matter of national propriety and prestige now to declare ones aversion to this language, and to cry for its abolition.
There was a time when many people blindly admired English, and the ability to talk and write in the English language earned great prestige for a person. Notwithstanding, at present the patriotic fervour of the people made the language a hotcake for debate. Narayan (2000) depicts the same situation in his first novel Swami and Friends dealing with the effect of the colonial rule on the Indian people. The novel discloses that while people feel antipathy towards the British, they are also attracted to the paraphernalia of the colonial power. As a result, the colonial language has been the signifier of power and dignity. In the Albert Mission School, English is the most prestigious subject. Sankars name is well known because he can speak to the teachers in English in the open class (Swami and Friends 7); and likewise Rajams friends respect him because he speaks very good English, exactly like a European (Swami and Friends 12). In Fifteen Years, Narayan (1988a) takes a postcolonia l view on this issue, showing his awareness that English is an alien language, yet advocating its use in India for practical purposes. According to him, the day-to-day reality has made it impossible for the Indians to castigate the English language.
Narayan (1988a) presents an imaginary conversation between an Indian judge and the personified English language. The judge puts forth the verdict that the English language must leave the country-

When we said, Quit India, we meant it to apply to Englishmen as well as their language. And there does not seem to be much point in tolerating you in our midst. You are the language of the imperialist, the red-tapist, the diabolical legalist, the language which always means two things at the same time. (Fifteen Years 15)

Contrariwise, in reply to the judge, the English language points out that it has been firmly rooted in the Indian soil. In other words, having been practised for two hundred years, the English language has been part and parcel of the Indian society including its education, cultural activities, government machinery, law courts, business, trades, sports, aviation, navigation, agriculture, science, technology and so forth. In the essay, although the judge feels that the language must quit India, he cannot present any solid ground why it should be so; rather he remains confused and his advocacy inconclusive.
Hence, Narayan (1988a) is found to claim that the English language has been an integral part of the Indian reality. In fact, in the Indian context, it has been turned into the Indian English rather than the English of England. Narayans (1988a: 8) position seems to echo the statement of Iyengar (2000): English has become ours, it is not less ours for being primarily the Englishmans or the Americans.

IV
Narayan (1988a) obviously objectively thinks over the case of Hindi, that is, its establishment as a state language within a limited period of time. And in the essay To a Hindi Enthusiast, he suggests that it is impossible to impose Hindi as a state language in a set time limit. Quoting the aphorism from Shakespeare that ripeness is all, he argues ripeness cannot be forced by a government order or by the prescription of a commission. Like a sociolinguist (e.g. Hudson 1981), he maintains that the growth of a language is a natural process, which cannot be artificially stopped. Narayan (1988a: 26) then advocates the cause of English by adopting a postcolonial view-

For me, at any rate, English is an absolutely swadeshi language. English, of course, in a remote horoscopic sense, is a native of England, but it enjoys, by virtue of its uncanny ability, citizenship in every country in the world. It has sojourned in India longer than you or I and is entitled to be treated with respect. It is my hope that English will soon be classified as a non-regional Indian language.

It is thus evident that Narayan (1988a) is not advocating the servile imitation of the English language or the culture represented and spread by it. Rather, his intention is to absorb it into the grand procession of the Indian languages. The English language would be treated as one in the long list of the Indian languages and dialects, and its inclusion would not at all affect the total pattern of the language habit of the Indian people.

While Narayan (1988b: 28) seems to accept the presence of English in the day-to-day Indian reality, he also analyzes the cause of its popularity, commenting in To a Hindi Enthusiast that half the charm of English was engendered by the manner in which its schoolbooks were produced. The high quality print and coloured frontispiece exhibiting some London Bridge, rivers and towers, and the carefully selected contents with relevant black and white pictures have played a significant role in establishing the English language in this country. Narayans experience is consistent with that of Anita Desai (1996: 222) who writes in her essay A Coat in Many Colors-

Hindi texts we were given to study were, in contrast to the English ones, dry, pedantic, unimaginative, and unrelated to the simplicities of everyday life. They were also unattractively printed and published, a not unimportant factor to a child who, at that age, judges by the feel, the touch, and the taste of things.

It is then evident that both Narayan and Anita Desai are of the opinion that the highly sophisticated and impressive appearance of English books is responsible for their popular appeal to the people in India.
On the whole, Narayans position respecting the issue of the English language is rather complex. He seems to say that it could have been better if Hindi had taken the place of the English language in India, but presently it seems impossible to put Hindi to that exalted status and, therefore, it will be wise to accept the position of the English language. Again, when Narayan speaks in favour of the English language, he does not mean the Kings English; rather he means the language that has been coloured with the Indian context and filled with the vocabulary from the native languages and dialects. In his essay A Literary Alchemy, Narayan (1988c: 197) puts forward his idea of the Indian English which, he thinks, is the inevitable outcome of a natural process-

We have fostered the language for over a century and we are entitled to bring it in line with our own habits of thought and idiom. Americans have adapted the English language to suit their native mood and speech without feeling apologetic, and have achieved directness and unambiguity in expression.

That is, Narayan is suggesting that the Indian people should violate the purist conception of the English language and insert some new expressions suiting the Indian context. To Narayan, expressions like Please do the needful and And oblige are very much pertinent to the Indian context. Although inappropriate according to the purist standard of the English language, these expressions are a masterpiece of economy and contribution to the English language (A Literary Alchemy 198). While Narayan is considering the use of the Indian English, he is, at the same time, proposing to reconstruct the universal criteria of the language. In other words, he is abrogating and appropriating the language.
Narayan (2001c: 480) seems to be mocking at the idea of adhering to the principles laid down by the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) which, in his essay After the Raj is described as a sacred cow for us in India. He expresses the same attitude in his essay English in India where he asserts that for maximum benefit the English language must reach the grassroots level of India. And here too he is speaking not of standard English but of its Indian variety: the language must be taught in a simpler manner, through a basic vocabulary, simplified spelling, and explained and interpreted through the many spoken languages of India (Narayan 2001c: 468).

VI
Narayan shows his awareness to the complex issues regarding the position of the English language in the colonial India. He is conscious of the foreign origin of the language and its imperial connotation. Notwithstanding, he clearly depicts how the English language has established a firm root in India and become an essential part of its social reality. Thus, Narayans voice is rather polyphonic.
That is to say, Narayan seems to believe that it is impossible to eliminate the English language from the social reality of India. And he pragmatically suggests the acceptance of the language in its Indianized form. Hence, Narayans attitude towards the English language is formed by the postcolonial reality and utilitarian value. To sum up, as Iyengar (2000: 359) comments, Narayan-

uses the English language much as we used to wear dhoties manufactured in Lancashire but the thoughts and feelings, the stirrings of the soul, the wayward movements of the consciousness, are all of the soil of India.

English Language Games Are The Best Ways To Teach ESL Children!

I think sometimes it's easy to slide in to the pitfall of either treating kids like adults or treating them as a solitary unit. Children are neither of these two options and that is something I love most about them! Some might have really short attention spans when compared with grown ups however they also simply soak up education like a sponge, without having lots of the preconceptions and doubts that cause adults to falter in their learning. This is the reason ESL beginners are a real joy to instruct and can make your job as a teacher so fulfilling. It's crazy if you think that when kids are motivated and interested they could retain around 80% of a language lesson - this places them miles in front of the majority of adults!

Here are a couple of ideas to ensure that you're giving kids the most appealing learning experience possible and getting the most reward out of your time with them as you can:

1.The very first tip is to show patience! This may sound like an obvious one who would educate children should they did not have patience? Yet at times the best motives are tested when kids start getting restless within your lesson. ESL classes, as with any early development classes have to be set up to accommodate kids having numerous breaks and a lot of activities. Kids have brief attention spans but, by planning with this in mind, you'll be able to stay away from feeling frustrated.

2. Keep levels of energy up! This is the reason lecture style English teaching materials have quite a low effectiveness. When looking at an hour or so of reproducing key phrases, children just lose almost all their vitality. This is such a shame as there is practically nothing more entertaining than a gang of vitalized, enthusiastic students. I think they're almost certainly a better way of teaching different languages to grown ups too!

3. Modify your activities to permit for as many different learning styles as is possible. Children are just like us in that they all learn diversely and respond far better to different styles of teaching. For instance, certain children react well to singing or dancing. While other children just generally wish to read. Others enjoy craft time or perhaps resolving challenges in some way. If you recognize various learning styles it's fairly simple to adapt your lesson strategy and activities to add as many as feasible.

4. Total physical response! This is actually the technical phrase for keeping kids moving around! The Perils Of Mispronunciation found in English conversation

This article reviews the many pitfalls of English language pronunciation (especially for Spanish speakers) and so recommends an English conversation course.

What's the difference between Ruben Dario and Ru�ben Dar'io? Getting there and not getting there. This metro stop in Madrid presents a problem for English speakers for two reasons, pronunciation and word stress. Normally pronounced RU-ben DAR-ee-o by an unfamiliar English speaker will often result in a Spaniard asking "Que" (what)? However, correct Spanish pronunciation, ru-BEN dar-EE-o, brings a nod and a favorable response.

Pronunciation broadens understanding and, therefore, communication while mispronunciation often leads to confusion and frustration. Imagine how I felt after repeating "Ruben Dario" three times thinking the Spaniard I was talking to either wasn't hearing me or wasn't familiar with his own geography. The same can be said of a Spaniard trying to pronounce a word in English. Allow me to illustrate this point with a recent experience I had teaching a group of Spanish speaking air traffic controllers; they asked "Are you kuw-THOL-ik?" "Am I colic? Alcoholic?" I wondered. The students will repeat what the teacher says and then, maybe, try on their own. Often the teacher will stand in front of the class and model how his/her mouth looks as he/she says the sounds, having the students also model this behavior. Sometimes, an audiocassette or CD will be played with words, sentences and stories for the students to hear native speakers speaking. Another popular activity in these classes is role-playing. Two or three students will practice together, having a simple conversation. After having ample time to practice, or memorize their various �roles,' they will stand up, maybe go to the front of the class, and recite what they have just practiced with their respective groups.

None of these activities are bad or damaging to the students. In fact, they have proven to be very useful. However, there are many more opportunities for students to gain confidence, practice, and extend themselves - especially for the ESL student who must learn the language for more than just pleasure. For students who are displaced for whatever reason or who are studying to go abroad,content is also an important factor.

Content Learning for English Language Learners

In the ELT class, the instructor needs to put the language learning of the students as a high priority. There are many ways to accommodate this. Educators will have different theories and philosophies. According to Peregoy & Boyle (2001), the six elements that create optimal content learning for �English Language Learners' are:meaning and purpose,prior knowledge,integration of opportunities to use language and literacy for learning purposes,scaffolding for support,collaboration, &variety.

Meaning and purpose in each activity in the ELT class is of the utmost importance to the English learners. If the activity has meaning and purpose, then the learner will take ownership over it and then a sense of pride and confidence will result. Often the activities with �real world' ties have the greatest impact. This is an element that should be present in ELT instruction from the youngest language learners to the eldest.

Prior knowledge of a subject in their home language and culture allow students to create links to topics or activities in English. For example, when talking about traffic rules in an English speaking country, the second language learners can relate their own experiences in their home countries. Of course, this will only be meaningful to students with prior knowledge of the traffic laws and rules. If the learners are too young, their prior knowledge in many areas will be limited. If old enough, the learners can relate the information from their experiences and often feel more connected to the learning community.

Integration of opportunities to use language and literacy for learning purposes is crucial to bringing concreteness to the abstract/theoretical concepts and ideas. This means that it is important to make room for learning opportunities to take place in order for students to put their newly acquired skills to work. If a teacher asks the students to review an article and share their findings with the class, the teacher is integrating chances for students to make light of what they are learning.

Scaffolding for support means that the teacher will first model the desired behavior, give assistance the first few times that the learners attempt the tasks, and finally, the learners will attempt on their own. This gives learners the skills and confidence needed to complete the assigned tasks. Scaffolding is not only used in ELT classes, but in many other subjects as well.

Collaboration is key to group learning and ultimately, to individual learning. Collaboration is used in modern offices and businesses globally. It has many ties to the skills needed to work with others in any endeavor that a person might undertake. There are very few instances in the �real world' where there is not some degree of collaboration. Collaboration is of vast importance in the ELT classroom to encourage cooperation skills.

Variety is needed in lessons and activities to avoid burnout and boredom. From the adult learners of English to the youngest of learners, variety in their activities will spark creativity and excitement in almost all topics covered. When students walk into a classroom day after day and week after week, they expect some variety in their routine. If no variety is given, the students may plateau in their learning because of lack of interest.

All of these elements should be present in the ELT classroom for the educator to be effective. There are many activities in the ELT classroom that ELT teachers will use that support these points. Journaling is one of the most effective and commonly used activities for ELT and English classes alike.

Traditional Journaling and Learning Logs

The style of journaling a teacher prefers to use is inconsequential compared to the regularity of the activities involving writing and logging their thoughts and reflections. The student of English, native or not, needs constant practice and feedback. "Fluency, the ability to get words down on a page easily, can only come with writing practice and continued English language development." (Peregoy & Boyle, 2001) Journals or learning logs are a great way to find out a student's thoughts and ideas about a topic or activity. Often the most timid student is the most reflective writer.

Traditionally, these journals or logs have been kept on paper or in a book. It is paramount for students to have a record of their thoughts and their progress as a writer and user of English. The advent of computers, the Personal Digital Assistant or PDA, mobile phones, e-mail, and the Internet usher in a new world of recording ones thoughts. Why not take advantage of these technologies in the ELT classrooms? The next section, will discuss what teachers are doing in their classes in order that technology is used to the fullest extent.

Move to Educational Technology in the Classroom

What is technology? Technology is anything that extends human capability. By definition, paper clips and staples are forms of technology because they extend human capability. Nevertheless, paper clips and staples are �low-tech;' audio, video, and computer driven tools are considered �high-tech,' or commonly referred to as �technology.'

Most people have an e-mail address or at least, know what e-mail is. When a person looks around the World Wide Web, the "Internet," there are advertisements everywhere for degrees and certificates in �Educational Technology.' Educational Technologyis using any form of technology (high-technology, by the above definition) in an educational setting, to assist teachers in their instruction. From CD-ROM games for students to MS Power Point presentations to help explain a concept, idea, or topic, technology is here to stay so why are some teachers still afraid to use it?

The term �technophobe' means a person who is afraid to use technology. Many teachers are technophobes. They are not certain or unaware that technology can help them to become better educators. It is true that not all technology is good and often can be counter-productive. However, an educator must be open to trying and evaluating new and emerging technologies to see where this might fit into their instruction. Whether or not a teacher knows it, their English language learners may be using and interacting with technology everyday. Therefore, teachers need to at least be aware of the impact technology is having on their learners.

Does India need a single national language that badly? Or does it even want one? A national language is a symbol of territorial integrity and cultural consensus, it ought to be more than just a language on paper, and it must be grown from a tender seedling to a fertile crop.

In today�s scenario I would really like to question out India�s stand as a linguistic majority. It is English that has become the solved immobile face Rubik cube that is preventing any other faces of the cube from free rotation. English is an elite language and have in built limits to growth or of losing their exclusiveness. It is no longer a duplicate code to use with foreigners. In India English is more of a social prize and it cannot be learned quickly and dispassionately. English is studied of its commercial and so called political value. Girls are taught English as a passport to marriage. The benefits of English medium culture are clear to all, but it is not available outside the small elit e. Where does that leave Hindi or other vernaculars? Though much more available and widely known, our vernaculars have little appeal as the language of the future. They have just become like our Indian cows sacred but undernourished and ill adapted.

I know several instances where husbands are sorry because their wives cannot speak to them or their friends in English. I know families in which English has been made the mother tongue. Where are our early days when we used to contend with friends for knowing greater number of languages, in comparison to the present context where the accented English is conceived to be a highly posh entity?

It is unbearable that all the other vernaculars should be crushed and starved the way they have been. Being immaculate in one�s national language or one�s own maternal tongue not only removes superfluous strain on the English language but it also blows a beautiful breeze of linguistic pride.

India is mosaic of so many vari egate languages then I ask as to why should it be stuffed and walled on all sides by a single language that is neither obtainable to all sections of society nor is it easily accessible .

Looking into the present premiss I am afraid we�ll have to rehabilitate many sick cows i.e. languages of poetry, languages of the past and help them grow through an interface between technology and power and help them grow into languages of the future. We have to start to think about everything in them and use them for more than just trivial purposes. We must not let them succumb to the growing grandness of the English language. it would be a revolution if we have our youth with literary tastes to learn as much English and other world languages as they like and expect them to give the benefits of their learning to India say like a Bose, a Roy or a Tagore, because only then will there be an occasion wherein creative non elites like artisans, craftsmen would be transformed into true per fectionists of the society and in to more competitive and efficient workers.

Let not a single Indian forget, neglect or be ashamed of his or her mother tongue or feel that he or she cannot express the best of thoughts in his or her vernacular. For ours is not a language of the prison house, but a proof against insolence, pride of race, religion or color.

Moving ahead in your career – you need English

English is the undisputed language of the business world. So to succeed in the marketplace, one would need to have a good grasp of the language.

You may have all the technical skills, but if you do not have the required language skills, it would be difficult for you to move ahead in your career. You need English to present your ideas, in both small group discussions and large group presentations. You would need to write business correspondence in English – emails, letters, reports and proposals are mostly written in the language.

Let's say two people who graduate with the same qualifications are hired by the same company. The person who is able to speak, write and communicate more effectively in English would most likely be the person who would be given the promotions.

So if you want to move ahead in your career, it's time to brush up your English language skills – it's clearly the language of commerce and industry.

Improving your Vocabulary - “Just Do It”

Many people say they are not able to write or speak effectively in English as they lack the proper vocabulary to do so. There's no magic formula to improving your vocabulary, all it really takes is “just doing it”.

Let's say someone asks you to make a short speech entitled “Just Do It”. First, use the mind-map concept and place the phrase “Just Do It” in the centre of the page. Now think of all the words, phrases, expressions or ideas that you can relate, or connect to the phrase “Just Do It”. Write these down around the phrase “Just Do It”.

For example, I can think of the following words or phrases :

Don't delay; never put things off ; do what you can today, not tomorrow ; act now ; prioritize ; be quick, ;act fast, ;time and tide waits for no man ; the early bird catches the worm ; have a plan.

You may also want to think of words or expressions that are in total opposite to the concept of “Just Do It”. Why do this, you might ask? Well, sometimes to get your message across, or to emphasise your point, you may want to look at the idea of “Just Do It” from a different or a totally opposite perspective.

In this case, I can think of the following words or phrases :

Accumulate; backlog ; cannot achieve ; procrastinate ; disorganized ; haste makes waste ; fear factor; delays; work piling up.

Once you have enough words or expressions, you can now begin to sift through the words and see which ones would fit with the ideas that you want to share on the topic “Just Do It”.

Begin to use the mind-map concept to help you improve your vocabulary and you'll start to see that the key to improving your vocabulary is 'just doing it' – it's really not that difficult after all.

Is Grammar still Important?

The Internet has changed the way we talk and write. Just look at the language used when we chat, use text messaging and Instant Messaging. Sometimes it doesn’t even resemble English!

Because we have become so comfortable texting, we don’t even think twice about using the same language at our workplace. We construct sentences without giving grammar rules any thought. Our messages become muddled, confusing and lose their meaning. And we become frustrated when people don’t understand us or worse still get the wrong message!

I have many friends who complain about spending a lot of time sending messages to clarify earlier correspondences. I also know of bosses who complain about receiving such unprofessionally written documents with so many grammatical errors from their staff, that they wonder what has happened to the education system. A lot of time and effort will then be spent to correct and re-send these messages. And most times, it’s the bad grammar and texting language that is getting in the way of the message.

Also, when we write to friends, it is alright to be informal and use emoticons to express ourselves, but when we are writing at the workplace, we should not use emoticons unless we are absolutely sure that the reader will know how to appreciate such things.

So remember to keep texting language for your mobile phone correspondence, and use appropriate language and grammar for workplace communication as it is still important and necessary in office settings.

Success the Second Time Around

My husband emailed his friend a picture of our healthy ocra – asking for advice on when would be a good time to harvest the vegetable. It was a joke of course, meant to irk the close friend.

My husband is now reaping the fruits of his labour, but this wasn’t so a few months back. Then, he was, as he called himself “a failed farmer”. He had tried to plant vegetables in our small garden plot. He came close to succeeding, but somehow the harvest always eluded him.

Although disappointed, he never gave up. He sought advice – asking friends, and looking for answers on the Internet. He found out what his mistakes where, and decided to give it a second shot. I tried to discourage him, but he was determined to try again. I was the skeptic, he was the believer. His belief and resilience has paid off – and today, we wait excitedly for our first harvest.

I believe learning a language is like tending to a garden plot. More so learning a second language like English. Do not be afraid of trying to use the language. It is only by using the language that you can become more familiar with it. For example, if you force yourself to speak in English to your colleagues at the office, you will soon become more comfortable using the language to communicate. Everyone makes mistakes in the learning process. Value those people who are concerned enough to highlight your mistakes, and learn from those errors.

Many of us also need to write in English at the workplace. Again, do not be afraid of trying. Every time there is an opportunity to write, don’t pass up the chance. Think of it as a chance to improve yourself. Get help if you have to – from colleagues and superiors. Be willing to learn and you will, one day, be able to stand back and bask in your own success.

What happens when you join the working world and find that you need to write – emails, letters, and reports, amongst other things? Most times, you look around the office for samples or ask your new colleagues for advice. If you’re lucky you get the help and samples you are looking for, but at times, you scratch you head and just try and remember what your English teacher taught you about writing at school or college.

Writing for the workplace is different from writing at school or university. Many of us found this out the hard way – when we get told off by the boss for not writing clearly and professionally.

At the office, you have different audiences – the people who read your writing. These can be internal audiences – such as the boss, fellow colleagues, other bosses, senior management. External audiences could be suppliers, existing and potential customers, the general public, government and other related authorities.
So every time you sit down to write at the office, you need to know or at least be aware of who the reader is. And bear that person in mind when you draft out your correspondence.

Remember - you never write for yourself, you always write for someone else.

You might like it. This is hilarious.....even an Englishman could not construct
sentences using numeric, which is exclusive only to Malaysians and
Singaporeans.

Ah Lek was asked to make a sentence using 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
Not only did he do it 1 to 10, he did it again from 10 back to 1. This is what
he came up with.....

The Most Important Rule of Business Writing!

Many times when we sit down to write a business document - be it a letter, fax, email or report - we forget the most important rule. And that is to remember who we are writing for. In other words, who will our audience be? The reader is extremely important, because when we know who we are writing for, once we determine our purpose of writing, we will be able to decide on the type of language to use as well.

For example, if we are writing a memo to our collegaues to tell them of a fire drill taking place in the office, our purpose becomes to inform them of the event. We need not use extremely formal language, we will need to use language to inform, and we will need to provide them with the proper details of the event. Your tone can be friendly, but always maintain a level of politeness.

Now if we had to write a report for the senior managers of the company, our language style and tone would be different from the earlier task (the memo). Of course the format would also be different because it is now a report that you need to write. Your style would have to be more formal, so your choice of words have to be more formal as well. Depending on the report - it could be informational or analytical - you can then decide on the language to use. If it is informational, you will essentially be using language of reporting the facts. If it is analytical, you will be weighing the facts or the current situation, and then drawing your own conclusions. So you are going one step further than just reporting, you will have to analyse information and come to a conclusion(s).

So always remember the most important rule of business writing - and that is to know your audience. Remember you are writing for them, and not for yourself!

Don't shout in your emails!

A lot us of are communicating via emails in the office these days. Since emails are a fairly new thing - well we never learnt about them in schools!! - we write them based on our experience in writing letters, and faxes.

Emails are fairly informal methods of communication - so we can address people by the first names, or at most if you need to be formal - a Mr, Mrs, Ms salutation would suffice. Ending the mail with a Regards, Kind Regards or Best Regards would also deemed to be appropriate.

Write your email as you would speak - so use language that is clear, easy to understand and keep to the point. Emails should not be too long - a maximum of four paragraphs should do it. Also, the number of characters in a sentence should not be more than 60 characters.

One important thing to note is never to use capital letters in your emails - whether it is for your subject heading or for words in your email - writing using the CAPS key makes it look like you are shouting. This is considered rude and impolite. Use the upper and lower case lettering for all your emails. If you think that something in your mail should be highlighted because it is important, use the bold and highlight keys. Remember never shout in your emails!

Extreme, the Blues and Synergy!

Extreme, The Blues and Synergy! What an impressive bunch! Eager, fresh faces never tired of asking questions, always game for a challenge and keen on learning the latest techniques and tips on English at the Workplace. Not afraid of working hard nor playing hard!

The first batch of management trainees kept me on my toes, as we went through many aspects of business English. We kicked off with the rules of business writing, had a laugh on the 'blur concept' and the Malaysian local specialities, and moved on to letters. Covered a lot of ground on Day 1. Day 2 saw them coping with business letters and emails. Many of them, fresh out of college, were not aware of the language and style of writing to use when writing official business correspondence. We did a lot of letter writing practice, and had fun vetting each other's work and making comments.

Day 3 & 4 were spent on oral presentations. We learnt how to hook and capture audience attention. We learnt that some questions are not meant to be answered, and how to zoom in on certain aspects of our presentation and keep the topic on course. Making impromptu presentations proved to be nerve-wracking for some, while others took to it like ducks to water. We had the sessions video-taped and had the chance to play back the sessions. Everyone got the opportunity of watching themselves in action - some enjoyed it, others felt they could have done better.

All in the four days were a challenging both for the trainees and myself. A great teaching-learning experience. Am looking forward to more such sessions!

English Varieties

I found some excerpts from a paper presented by Kachru in 1984 that made interesting reading. Would like to share it with all.

He states that there is a distinction between a speech community (our World Englishes article makes mention of this) and a speech fellowship. He says : I believe that the term speech fellowship brings us closer to the real world of the English users, their underlying distinct differences and also their shared characteristics. One might find that the genesis of each such speech fellowship in English is unique, or there may be typologies of general patterns of development. He quotes Quirk (1972 :26 ) as saying :

In the last 50 years such varieties of English have become so widespread in a community and of such long standing that they may be thought stable and adequate enough to be institutionalised and regarded as varieties of English in their own right rather than stages on the way to a more native-like English.

What we see here is that the non-native English-using speech fellowships are using Englishes of the world in their *divergent situations and contexts and with various linguistic and ethnic attitudes.* ... "situation" includes the linguistic, political and sociocultural, and economic ecology in which the English language is used. *Context* refers to the roles of the participants in these situations and to the appropriateness of varieties of language used in these roles. And *attitude* is specifically used here for the overt and covert attitudes toward a language, its varieties,and the uses and users of these varieties.
